Le Trident : Antigone in the amazon
In the state of Pará, in northern Brazil, capitalism is devouring nature. The trees are burned to make way for soybean cultivation. This is where Milo Rau and his team went, in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, to create an Antigone for the XNUMXst century.
"There are monstrous things, but nothing is more monstrous than the human." On screen, the choir intones its tragic song. A song that is a formidable diatribe against the protagonists on stage. Filmed shots and live sequences on stage respond to each other; the dialogue is eloquent. We are both in the heart of the mythical Thebes and in the state of Pará where the Brazilian Amazon jungle is disintegrating, pillaged and irreparably destroyed by large industrial groups. An Antigone embodied by the indigenous activist of the Amazon, Kay Sara, alongside an ancient choir composed of survivors of the worst massacre by the military police against the MST movement in 1996. An allegory of political struggle and fierce resistance in the face of the implacable greed of a modern and devastating world.
