Le Trident : Carmen

CHERBOURG-EN-COTENTIN
– General de Gaulle Square
· Italian theatre
After the success of Phèdre! and Giselle…, presented at the Trident, François Gremaud closes with Carmen his trilogy devoted to three exceptional female figures.
Make way for opera, and not just any opera! Composed by Georges Bizet on a libretto inspired by a short story by Prosper Mérimée, the work remains one of the most performed lyrical pieces throughout the world.
The story is well-known: charged with taking the young gypsy girl he has just arrested to prison, Don José falls madly in love with her to the point of stabbing her, drunk with jealousy, when she lets herself be seduced by a local bullfighter.
No ramparts of Seville here, however, but a bare stage on which the singer Rosemary Standley narrates, comments (with humor), then ends up performing this standard of European musical culture.
Accompanied by five musicians (accordion, harp, flute, violin and saxophone), Rosemary Standley sings of Carmen's freedom. "Free she was born, and free she will die."
Be careful!
