Le Trident : Oüm
With Oüm, Fouad Boussouf pays a vibrant homage to Oum Kalthoum, Egyptian diva of Arabic song and to Omar Khayyam, Persian poet of the 11th century, whose poems celebrating drunkenness and trance she sings.
From the 1920s to the 1960s, Oum Kalthoum was the object of an unprecedented cult in the Arab world. An ultra-modern diva, she improvised for hours, sang about love, rebellion, pleasure, exaltation, emotional shocks and did not hesitate to dress like a man if she wished.
The choreographer finds his inspiration in his childhood with this unique voice which flooded the streets, the souk, the cars, the bars of his native village.
Carried by the vibrations of live music, the bodies and singing of the performers bring to life this timeless trance that revives a period when dance, music and poetry were part of the cultural landscape of the great Arab capitals.
