Its origin dates back to the time of the Vikings, eleven centuries ago. Bricquebec-en-Cotentin, like its neighbors Valognes and Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, received recognition as a Country of Art and History in 2001.

A dungeon in the city

The polygonal keep and all the ruins of the fortified castle are listed as Historic Monuments. The impressive foundations occupy an important place in the heart of the city.

Many years later, another monumental building will see the light of day in Bricquebec-en-Cotentin: the Cistercian abbey of Notre-Dame de Grâce, founded in 1824. The monks of Bricquebec drained the surrounding swamps and created a dairy cow farm. , mills, a cheese factory, a pig farm, a poultry farm, a charcuterie laboratory and a monastic store. They have long been famous in Normandy for their cheese, Trappe de Bricquebec, also called “La Providence”. This cheese is now made by the Maîtres Laitiers du Cotentin. The abbey, however, continues to manufacture charcuterie under the brand “Le Cochon du Père Marc”.

Bricquebec enjoys an exceptionally green and hilly surrounding nature where it is good to hike, cycle, mountain bike or horseback. The Monday market is an unmissable event.

The meaning of the party

During the last week of July, the Sainte-Anne of Bricquebec-en-Cotentin, organized by the festival committee, enlivens the streets for four days with a large traditional funfair, folk groups from the four corners of the world, roasters. This festive event attracts a large audience.
