The Cotentin Tourist Office obtains classification in 1st category of Tourist Offices
To aspire to this classification, the Cotentin Tourist Office, established in 2018, had to first be classified in Category II and then undergo an audit to obtain the Tourism Quality Mark last May. This ranking is now official since November 27, 2023 and is valid for 5 years.
Issues and interest in the Tourist Office classification
The Tourist Office classified in Category I is an entrepreneurial type structure intended to bring together professionals and develop the tourist economy in its geographical area, with a significant natural tourist flow from national and international sources.
To be classified Category I, the Tourist Office must respect a grid made up of 19 criteria, reflecting certain strong orientations:
• Maintaining a quality physical welcome, including for international customers;
• Strengthening the use of new technologies (multilingual website) for public information (before and during the stay) and processing customer satisfaction (after the stay). Because as a reminder, 1% of visitors to the region go through one of our tourist information offices.
Furthermore, classification in Category I allows communities already classified as “Tourist Municipalities” to access classification as “Tourist Resort” which constitutes recognition of excellent hospitality. Without this classification, the said municipalities cannot claim it.
Thus, thanks to this classification, the commune of Barneville-Carteret, already historically classified as a Tourist Resort, will be able to renew its classification and Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, recognized as a Tourist Commune, will be able to claim the classification in Tourist Station.
Barneville-Carteret has been classified as a Tourist Resort since 2017 for 12 years and a seaside resort for over 100 years. It is a recognition which rewards the efforts of a community to structure the tourist offer. With the classification of the Tourist Office in Category 1, we will be able to continue to develop our tourist attractiveness and ensure that our seaside resort is ever more welcoming.
David Legouet
Mayor of Barneville-Carteret
Classified as a Tourist Municipality since 2021, we can now claim prefectural classification as a Tourist Resort, thanks to the new Category 1 classification obtained by the Cotentin Tourist Office. Being a Tourism Station means having access to additional funding or additional human resources to pursue our commitments to a quality tourist experience. Our territory has a real tourism strategy and we all work together to promote Cotentin in France and internationally.
Gilbert Doucet
Mayor of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue
This classification in the first category is recognition of the structuring and tourism development accomplished by the Tourist Office. It continues the strategy put in place since its creation in 2018. For several years now, our territory has established itself as a first choice destination popular with tourists. Only 38% of Tourist Offices in France are at the top of this ranking. It is therefore a positive signal which encourages us to continue the efforts undertaken to further promote the many assets of Cotentin.
