GR®223 – Utah Beach – Sainte-Mère-Eglise
Description
15 km to cover between sand tracks, dirt roads and asphalt roads to reach the famous town of Sainte-Mère-Église.
From the Landing Museum, follow the departmental road which runs along the sea then turn off towards the dunes. A quick trip to the “Aux viviers d’Utah Beach” store is a must to taste and take away Utah Beach’s special oysters. Raised on the foreshore, their salty taste will not leave you indifferent. The company also breeds bouchot mussels, the stakes of which you can see in the bay.
After this tasting, join the coastal path; the view is then striking on the first beach stormed by the allies on June 6, 1944. Today this beautiful 5km long beach is an ideal spot for sand yachting. Don’t hesitate to contact Utah Mer Loisirs to get your fill of sensations.
Arriving at the Leclerc monument, it is then time to leave the coast to find a more stable surface and landscapes of wet meadows. This monument commemorates the Landing of the Allies on June 6 but also that of the second French armored division commanded by General Leclerc on August 1, 1944. You can approach a Sherman tank, a light armored vehicle, a half-track and terminal no. 1 of the Way of the 2nd DB. We leave the memorial behind us to reach Saint-Martin-de-Varreville then Turqueville. The bell tower of the church of Sainte-Mère-Église can be seen in the distance, the finish is near. To end this day of walking, open the doors of the Sainte-Mère-Église brasserie. Blonde, brunette, redhead, white, IPA, sit comfortably in the pub with your beer while watching the brewers behind the bay window.
