LA HAGUE, AN TERRITORY OF EXCEPTIONAL CHARACTER
Located at the north-western tip of Cotentin, on the Armorican massif, the Geopark projet from The Hague, extends over 19 delegated municipalities having recently merged into a single municipality. This small territory of approximately 150 km² and 12 inhabitants, nevertheless allows us to tell 000 billion years of Earth's history, that is to say almost half of the history of our planet. On this small territory at the end of the world, which has traveled throughout the history of the Earth at different latitudes, the oldest rocks in mainland France are accessible to the touch. La Hague is also the remains of 2,1 mountain ranges, which erosion has slowly dismantled, the remains of explosive volcanic eruptions or the climate archives preserved for 3 years which also echo today's issues. today.
Culeron cove, Ecalgrain Bay, La pointe de Jardeheu, or Herquemoulin constitute references for specialists and formidable field schools for curious audiences driven by a desire for knowledge about the history of the Earth or climates.
La Hague, it is also a whole range of landscapes, which have long benefited from a high level of protection, a strong local attachment and a socio-economic dynamism which has made it possible to preserve them. The exceptional character and diversity of its landscapes justified national protection several decades ago because of their general interest from a “picturesque” point of view. La Hague is also to this day a Grand Site in project, aspiring to become a Great Site of France.
All the links that man has forged with his substrate can be read in his landscapes from his northern cliffs, immortalized by Jean-Francois Millet, passing through its narrow coastal meadows with Irish accents, its moors, its vast dune massif, or through the beauty of its very well preserved built heritage.
