The Shadoks by Jacques Rouxel offer a dose of fantasy and offbeat humor, enhanced with tangy colors.

"Back to Cotentin!” is a series of exhibitions and a fresco presented on four sites in Cotentin between April and November 2023, they will allow visitors to discover these drawings which have marked pop culture since the 60s.

Did you know that the author of these mythical characters comes from Cotentin?

Jacques Rouxel was born in Cherbourg in 1931 and spent his youth between the United States, Paris and Anse du Brick. This Fermanvillais at heart settled near Port Lévi where he also liked to observe landlubbers from the sea.

With the aim of paying tribute to this artist and introducing his work to future generations, theCotentin agglomeration and City of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin have joined forces to offer exhibitions on 4 sites.

Ludiver Planetarium – The Hague (Tonneville)

From 8 April to 12 November

Interior exhibition:
There you will find the collection and archives of the studio founded by Jacques Rouxel “AAA production”. We discover a large number of drawings by the author, storyboards and production documents for the series, but also letters from viewers, videos and personal photographs of the artist.

Also presented are educational materials created specifically for this exhibition and linked to the scientific purpose of the Ludiver Planetarium. Screenings and activities are offered to the local and passing public throughout the duration of this exhibition.

Outside :
In the landscaped park, exhibition panels present a series of drawings entitled “The Shadoks Mottos”. Fanciful vision and scientific vision coexist.

Port Lévi and Anse du Brick – Fermanville

At Port Lévi and the Anse du Brick car park, exterior panels present designs inspired by the marine world. 2 Triptychs on each site.
Photos and testimonies of Jacques Rouxel's attachment to Fermanville are also present.

The exhibition Shadoks and company, the adventurers of the absurd will draw a parallel between the drawings and episodes of the Shadoks series and various works in the “spirit of the Shadoks”: contemporary, literary, intellectual, pictorial works of art …
Before or after the Shadoks, these works will take us on a journey into the zany universe of the writer Alfred Jarry, the poet Jacques Prévert, the artist François Curlet or even international artists like Peter Fischli, Erwin Wurm or Joan Miró...

And from the end of May:

A mural bearing the effigy of the Shadoks at the corner of rue Jacques Rouxel and rue de l'Ermitage will be created.
With a length of more than 30 meters and 5,5 meters high, it will represent a set of sketches of the adventures of the Shadoks.

The composition was worked in connection with the AAA production company, holder of the Rouxel rights, and will be produced by locally well-known Street artists, Blesea et Baby K, formed in pairs for the occasion.
