Overview
The hangar was built by the French Navy to house airships used to escort convoys and locate submarines and mines during the First World War. After this first crucial period, the Hangar served in turn as a Marine artillery school, a logistics site for the Germans and the Todt Organization and for the Americans as a huge repair garage for American vehicles. All these occupants left numerous and remarkable graffiti there.
It will experience a 3rd war, the Cold War from 1967 to 1969, for the construction of balloons for nuclear tests.
Unique in the world, this immense construction can be visited in 3 stages: firstly, the museum explaining its history as well as an exhibition on the Battle of Montebourg in 1944, an explanatory film and a visit to the hangar.
Groups by appointment.
