LA HAGUE, A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR THE PAINTER OF PEASANT REALITIES
Jean-François Millet was born in Gréville-Hague in 1814. After a peasant childhood in La Hague, he began his training as a painter in Cherbourg then in Paris and settled in Barbizon in 1849. He only returned on rare occasions in his native village, but his work bears witness to the deep imprint left by Gruchy and La Hague on his palette.
The site offers a tour combining original works, ethnographic objects and audiovisual presentations on the life and work of the Norman painter.
From the common room evoking the childhood of Jean-François Millet through the landscapes, agricultural and domestic work, come in search of the major events and artistic life that marked the 19th century. Finally, relive the incredible epic of the artist's most famous painting, The Angelus.
Continue your discovery with the places that inspired the Manche painter: Castel-Vendon rock, the end of the village, the church, etc. (hiking circuits from the Birthplace).
Temporary exhibition “Retourner la terre”, from April 7: Visual artist Bernard Clarisse offers an interpretation of working with the earth, inspired by Greek authors and the work of Jean-François Millet. Old tools, paintings and installations by the artist interact with works from the departmental collection.
