Small Cotentin estuary
The impressionist painting of the tides
If there is a stop not to be missed on this coastal route, it is Port-Bail-sur-Mer. This adorable city perfectly illustrates the life of the inhabitants, punctuated by the comings and goings of the sea. During the high equinox tides, the sea passing under the thirteen arches of the remarkable bridge, fills the harbor until reaching the edge of the church with an imposing tower dating from the first half of the 15th century. Between sea light and cloudy skies, the reflection of the village gives the whole thing the powerful effect of an open-air master painting. In Port-Bail-sur-Mer, you have to let yourself be guided by chance, to discover the streets, the port, the pretty seaside villas.
Special case ! Two churches are located a few hundred meters from each other... in fact, in 1818, the commune of Port-Bail merged with the neighboring commune of Gouey... both groups remain! The Notre-Dame church, the one located on the edge of the harbour, today hosts exhibitions, concerts and shows.
Port authority
Beaching port on catways and anchorages, the stopover for boats at Port-Bail-sur-Mer is accessible by taking a marked channel. This very pretty marina is an integral part of the sublime coast of harbors where many nautical activities are practiced.
America and England united!
The fine sand beach with often transparent waters owes its name to the American aviator, Charles Lindbergh, famous for having made the first solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in May 1927. Rumor has it that at the time, a resident heard the sound of the Spirit of Saint-Louis passing overhead. This impossible statement, and the arrival of Charles Lindbergh in Lessay two weeks after his exploit, gave the idea to a real estate developer to create a major tourist project there. The aviator did not fly over this beach but the name stuck and paradox of history, this corner of wild and preserved coastline is a refuge known by a large number of Anglo-Saxons, as it turns out!
